Handsome Devlin O’Driscoll

Captain (Reluctantly)

Played by Colin Gordon

Captain Devlin’s Backstory

The Celtic Sea was ruled with an iron hand by the name that struck fear in the hearts of sailors: Clan O’Driscoll! Expert seafarers with a reputation for ferocity, none dared sail their waters without their leave. No ship, barrel, or maiden was safe!

But the last great O’Driscoll set his course for the Barbary nearly a century ago.

Weened on the tales of his ancestors, Devlin set off to recapture his family’s glory. At twelve years of age he stowed away on a fishing vessel, making his way to England where he signed on to the first ship out. He spent the next several years charming his way across the Mediterranean, taking on any skill his fellow seafarers could offer and absorbing everything.

While in the employ of the East India Company, Devlin got into a fight with the Quartermaster. This unpleasant man took great joy in abusing the sailors under his command. In the ensuing “argument”, Devlin stabbed him in the throat and watched him choke on his own blood. The captain (a proper English gentleman that felt an Irishman killing an officer in any case was bad for morale) had him clapped in irons below decks.

Unsure how long he had been there, he was awakened by cannon-fire. A very timely attack! Seizing his opportunity, Devlin made his escape. In the confusion, he slipped his shackles and rowed himself away as his former vessel burned.

After drifting for days, he found himself upon an unknown island. There he discovered a hulk of a ship, abandoned on the shore. Taking shelter within it, Devlin looked it over and discovered that it could be made sea-worthy again. After several months labor, using what he could scrounge from the island and from trading with a local tribe, he got it back in the water. It wasn’t pretty but it would sail! The damaged nameplate was only partially readable, saying the something – “FORTUNE”. Looking upon his work, he laughed (as surely any interested deities that beheld his efforts would) and took this as an omen of things to come. Accepting his lot, he rechristened his vessel “FORTUNE’S FOLLY”. After several misadventures, he managed to limp the vessel into port. Here he began recruiting a “proper crew” for his ship. If you meet the crew of the FORTUNE’S FOLLY, you will see it is a goal he is still trying to achieve to this day!

Caitlyn “Cat” McKenna

First Mate

Played by Stephanie Krause

Cat’s Backstory

Cat joins the crew of the Fortune’s Folly as their First Mate & Ship’s Musician. Talented with her blade and quick with a tune (and vice versa), Caitlyn turned to piracy to seek a better life.

Born in Connacht Province in Ireland, (like the famous Irish pirate queen, Grace O’Malley), she was the eldest of 7 children from a poor family. Caitlyn knew she wouldn’t find a proper match for herself, nor would she be happy to simply be ‘someone’s wife’ if she did! One day, she clothed herself in a set of her brothers’ cast-off garments, and set off alone for the port town of Galway.

Calling herself “Cat,” she spent her days scrabbling for honest work and watching the sea-faring folk as they came through port. Eventually, she found work singing in the local taverns, and she continued to study the sailors as they did their mending, crafting, and even as they honed their skills with sword and pistol.

The day Captain Devlin came to town seeking a crew for the Fortune’s Folly, she knew she had to be on that ship. Initially, the crew balked at having a woman on board, but she bested 4 out of 5 of the men in a sword-duel, and impressed the captain.

Since that day, she has uplifted the crew with her music, and helped keep order with her blade. She loves the freedom and adventure that a life at sea offers her!

Redlegs

Quartermaster

Played by Jeff Cleve

Redleg’s Backstory

“Redlegs” is the bekilted former captain of the Sea Cucumber. He earned his nickname, “Redlegs”, because well…

His old ship foundered in a raging storm, and he and his crew were pitched overboard. Redlegs swam for shore, when out of the fog came another ship, that ran him under.

Redlegs has been searching the seas for the man at the helm for fifteen long years, and when he finds him, he will have his revenge.

In the meantime, Redlegs sails with the crew of the Fortune’s Folly, working as Quartermaster (and as the official crew ‘Rum-Tester’) and looking for a new ship to continue his search–Even if it is someone else’s ship. He can’t help himself… He used to be a Captain.

Mercy Grimm

Ship’s Cook

Played by Megan Murphy

Mercy’s Backstory

Mercy Grimm has always been the curious sort. Indeed, it was her endless curiosity that landed her with the crew of the Fortunes Folly. After a life lived in the kitchens of nobility, cooking and yearning for adventure, one day Mercy wandered upon a pirate ship and somehow convinced them to let her stay. She fed them well and lent her knowledge of trade routes gained from years of eavesdropping on nobles to assist the crew in their pillaging. And while she may still be terribly frightened of pirates, she protects her crew with all she’s got.

Chappy

“Master of Spirits”

Played by Thomas Abbott

Chappy’s Backstory

As a young boy, “Chappy” (not his given name, which has been forgotten over years of hardship and travel) grew up in a small village along the Scottish coastline. One summer, while he was out fishing, slavers came along and destroyed his boat, capturing him in the process.
After many seasons of forced work on the slavers’ ship, he finally managed to escape during an encounter with some pirates. Fortunately, he was able to get close enough to the coast that he was able to swim to safety.
Now, finding himself on the northern coast of Germany, he took refuge at a local vineyard and befriended the owner. He learned all about the process of winemaking which fascinated him and soon he became a master winemaker in his own right.
It was at this point he began traveling again. Buying his way from port to port by working on various ships.
At each port he visited, he also took the time to learn something new. He learned various disciplines of swordsmanship such as cutlass and Spanish rapier.
As the years went on, he became fascinated with the stories and mythology of the sea. Everywhere he went he learned and took aspects of various religions and cobbled them together into his own “Way of the Seas.”
As he bartered passage on the Fortune’s Folly, the crew started to seek his advice and began to view him as the ship’s unofficial chaplain. This made his trips much easier as he was not required to do as much physical work during the voyages, and led to his nickname, “Chappy.”

Robin Fallenelo

Able-Bodied Sailor

Played by Monica Marinaccio

Robin’s Backstory

Robin Fallenello quite literally fell into piracy. For many years she led a very unadventurous life. Sure, she had many interests to keep her busy. Crafting, dancing, drawing… some things she was better at than others. Robin also had a love of books. She loved reading about adventures on both land and sea. When she came across performing bards, she was enraptured as she listened to the tales being told or songs being sung. At night, as she would lay awake looking at the stars, she envisioned herself as a mighty swordsman, sailing from land to land. As fate would have it, her dream would come… *half* true.

One day while browsing in the marketplace, Robin accidently tripped over her own feet (she is in fact very clumsy, as her name suggests) and fell into a pirate. It wasn’t just any pirate, it was none other than Captain Nathaniel of the Roaming Raider. Feeling generous after a bountiful treasure haul, he forgave her literal misstep and took no action. In the following weeks, Robin often saw him carousing with his rowdy crew. Her curiosity and longing grew as she listened to their sea shanties and tales. Eventually she became friends with the lot and begged the captain to join. From then on she was taught the life of a pirate. Unfortunately, Captain Nathaniel quickly learned Robin was… accident-prone. From breaking the stair to the hold, acquiring cuts and bruises from trying to learn how to fight, or just tripping as she walked about the ship. She has managed to get tangled in ropes throughout the deck and has ended up overboard too many times to count. But her passion to learn and determination kept her from walking the plank.

Over time, the Roaming Raider crossed ships with another fellow pirate crew… the Pirates of Fortune’s Folly. During a night of merriment, Robin found the development of another love… Her love for their stoic Master of Spirits, Chappy. Shy, and a little intimidated, it took some time as the crews crossed paths for Robin to learn more and more about the reserved Chaplin. Unbeknownst to her, Chappy found Robin’s clumsiness endearing and would secretly smile at her. The two would be sad every time they had to say goodbye. The observant Captain Devlin noticed all of this, and also saw great potential in Robin. After some talk with his first mate, Cat McKenna, they agreed that Robin could join the crew of the Fortune’s Folly.

She still is a bit wobbly on her sea legs, but she’s more than happy to lend a helping hand to anyone who is brave enough to ask for it, and to learn skills from the talented members of her new crew.

Israel Scroop

Ship’s Lookout

Played by Haydn Floros

Israel’s Backstory

Our mate “Izzy” hates that nickname, and hails from the New World, from the colony of Rhode Island. He first set sail on a merchant ship hoping to get a taste of a life at sea. He’s been lookout for as long as he’s been working on ships, as he’s so good at it, he can “spot a fly on a needle from a mile away” (or so he says). Meanwhile, just in case, he also always carries his trusty spyglass.

Israel enjoyed life at sea, but not so much his crewmates on the merchant ship… They insisted on calling him “Izzy” and often ‘forgot’ to ring the bell, relieving him from his post. He once spent TWO DAYS up in the crow’s nest before relief was called.

He decided to take a bit of revenge on the cruel merchant sailors by not sounding the alarm as a pirate ship headed swiftly in their direction. Once the pirates took the ship, Israel decided to jump ship and join the pirate crew of the Fortune’s Folly.

Israel teaches the crew new things every day… Like the correct way to look at a spyglass is through the large lens and not the small one… of course!

He’s happy with the pirate life, and the more jovial nature of the crew of the Folly, and looking forward to all the adventure a career as a pirate can give him!

Stormy C.

Able-Bodied Sailor

Played by Eileen Morrison

Stormy’s Backstory

Stormy (proper name unknown, and that’s how she likes it!) is the daughter of a wealthy Irish family but never got along well with… well, anyone.
She was well known for having a hot temper and a great longing for adventure. After getting into all kinds of trouble and multiple fights in finishing school, Stormy ran off. She managed to sneak onto an unsuspecting pirate ship. After Redlegs discovered her hiding behind one of the rum barrels in the hold, Stormy became an apprentice to the crew. She has since been learning everything she can, from how to man the cannons, to how to hold her rum.

Billy the Bold

Musketeer

Played by Jim Teesdale

Billy’s Backstory

After sailing for a year under the Crown, Billy felt it was time to let go the chains and be free. That’s about the time he met up with Handsome Devlin… (I mean, really, look at him… I’d ship it.)
He then joined the crew as their musketeer and has been sailing on the Fortune’s Folly ever since.

A headshot of a smiling feminine person dressed as a pirate

Rose (The Dread Pirate Squeaky)

“Housekeeper”

Rose’s Backstory

Just like every ship needs a safe port, every crew needs a home for which to return. And our wondrous Rose has done her best to keep our seaside shanty, the ‘Leeward Bound’ in ship-shape to keep us warm through those winter months.

Rose’s background is a bit elusive, but we know she is incredibly street savvy, great with numbers, and can handle more than her own in any kind of skirmish… mostly the reason she never needs to carry a weapon on her person.

We know her parents traveled the spice routes peddling their wares… as to what the wares were, that’s very unclear. Smartly taking their daughter in tow, Rose got the traveling bug early in life. She learned as much as she could from the exotic far East of China and Japan, to the troubled West of the New World. Many a trade, skill, libation, recipe, and tale were picked up to the eventual delight of many… particularly those lucky enough to be in the port she landed in until she rummaged enough coin to head back out and wander further.

In the days before she joined our crew, the infamous (or just simply famous, in the right circumstances) Rose was best known for her ability to entertain through song, dance, and storytelling. What most didn’t know is just how light her fingers were while she dazzled onlookers… Poor Captain Devlin didn’t even notice his purse was missing until Cat had Rose backed into a corner. Rose, smart wench she is, handed the purse back to Cat without a hassle, recognizing the faces of the Pirates of Fortune’s Folly crew members scattered throughout the crowd. She’d heard the tales of this motley bunch and having known a sailor or three in her travels, she knew not to start a fight. Cat, realizing that Devlin’s purse was no easy thing to snatch, asked the blushing Rose if she wanted employ aboard the Fortune’s Folly.

Rose earned her Dread Pyrate Squeaky moniker while out on her first voyage with crew. The crew learned quickly that Rose should not be left to wander a ship alone. She was often seen sitting quiet as a mouse, but taking notes. Soon it was apparent that Rose had learned all the crew’s secrets and knew how to keep them to herself until it became useful.

So, in the best interest of the crew, Captain Devlin made two requests of her… to keep eyes on the horizon for a good spot to build a home base, and to entertain the crew while she would wander the ship.

Rose took up the challenge and decided that if the crew needed a home, it would be the best home they could ever ask for. It would also be as self sufficient as she had been through the years. So, her skills were all put to task, and she built the sea shanty up to the well-established tavern we call home today. Her only request was to be taken out on the occasional voyage to keep her wanderlust appeased.

Dakkar Cornish

Boatswain

Played by Kris Jarrett

Dakkar’s Backstory

Born in October of 1687 in the British Colony of Connecticut to one of the settlement’s original founders, Dakkar wanted to see the world beyond his small town, and so joined the King’s service in 1710.

Being of middling means, he was given a commission as a low ranking officer and shipped out from the port of Mystic aboard the HMS Perseverance bound for Port Royal, Jamaica, to join the fight against the pirate scourge of the King’s interests in the West indies.

To say Dakkar’s entry into service was problematic would be too kind to the situation. Never one to submit well to the orders of his betters, he quickly came into conflict with the ship’s company of gentleman officers.

After making clandestine plans with a small group of like-minded crew and stowing away stolen necessities and arms aboard the ship’s small cutter ‘Windward Bound’, he chose a time to cut the stolen boat free from her tow and disappear into the Caribbean night.

Unfortunately, the evening chosen for this grand escape coincided with a tropical storm. As all hands were busy in the storm, slipping away over the stern was not difficult, but the remainder of the stormy adventure would be. As the newly liberated crew made their way from the ship, they watched her, through some gross mismanagement of seamanship, dashed upon an unseen shoal and torn to bits with all hands lost.

Having at least done their minimum due diligence of checking the charts before departing, our forlorn crew knew they were not far from the shores of the Bahamas. They made all haste under sweep to reach the relative safety of those shores. Dakkar, at the helm, missed sighting just one rogue wave, and was promptly washed overboard.

However, through some bit of luck, he found himself clinging to a half empty barrel of rum which had been taken as critical cargo, and through further luck or the guidance of providence, said barrel managed to wash ashore with its passenger intact.

After spending a fortnight or so camped in the sand, the barrel now empty, he started a long walk to campfires in the distance. Happily, the fires were of a pirate camp; a crew taking on fresh water and supplies before setting out again on their mission to take what they wish from all sovereigns and merchants… this was the crew of the Fortune’s Folly.

Fortunately, assumed lost with the rest of the Perseverance crew, Dakkar found himself uniquely free from all oaths and obligations to crown or man. He often still wonders what became of his fellow deserters aboard that little cutter; perhaps, like he, they found safety among others of the piratical trade.

Given his new-found freedoms, and in the unique possession of the skills and knowledge of one formerly in the King’s employ, Dakkar quickly saw that the life of a pirate was the perfect situation for him. So, when given the opportunity, he quickly accepted the offer of a position aboard the Folly.

Captain Devlin wisely poised our knowledgeable lad as Boatswain in an attempt to whip this motley crew into shape. Dakkar takes his duties very seriously; always teaching the crew tactics, and seeing to the Folly’s rigging and gear at every chance.
